Paytm Might Get Messaging Feature in its App; Take on WhatsApp & other Chat Services in India

India’s largest Digital wallet app Paytm may soon allow people to chat each other from within the app. As per reports the company is planning to introduce messaging features in its app. However, there is no official statement or comment from Paytm on the matter. Paytm, which also runs an online marketplace known as Paytm Mall, claims to have about 230 million app users.

If the reports are to be believed, the roll-out of the feature might happen later this month. The move could be seen as a take on the messaging apps current trend, where messaging apps have been adding the payments feature. Hike Messenger introduced Unified Payment Interface (UPI) support in its app last month. WhatsApp is expecting to introduce the payment service later this year.

This isn’t Paytm’s first attempt to introduce messaging service in its app. In 2014, it had launched a shopping app with a mobile messenger feature in it, which allows the customers to negotiate with sellers. But Paytm is now looking to create a single place for its users, by offering not just payments but also an e-commerce platform, investment options in digital gold as well as booking services. The company recently launched its payments bank.

The market of messaging apps is getting too crowded, with Facebook’s WhatsApp and Messenger both being extremely popular in India. WhatsApp has over 200 million active users in India, While Hike claims to have over 100 million.Paytm’s high customer base can give the company an edge when it comes to getting traction for its chat service.
