GST Effect: Apple cuts the cost of iPhone, iPad and Mac in India

The introduction of new tax system named Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India, all mobile phones have attracted a 12 per cent tax because of GST,while they were previously taxed between 8 to 20 percent depending on the state, which has made most of the mobile phones expensive.

But Apple has cut down the market retail price of its products like iPhones, iPads and Macs in India. Apple has not confirmed that if the price cut is based on the new tax system in the country, but Apple CEO Tim Cook recently appreciated the government’s GST move during PM Modi’s visit to the United States. They are offering nearly up to 7.2 percent discount on the iPhone range in India.

iPhone SE (32GB) and (128GB) mobiles cost post GST in India wereRs 27,200 and Rs 37,200 respectively. Now, after the GST, both the models get discounts and are available at Rs 26,000 (32GB) and Rs 35,000 (128GB). Apple has already started selling the Made in India iPhone SE in select retail outlets.
GST impact

iPhone 6s Plus (32GB) earlier cost wasRs 60,000, which is now available at Rs 56,100, which means that the mobile gets a price cut up to Rs 3,900. While the 128GB variant of the iPhone 6s Plus was availableearlier at Rs 70,000, and now it is available at Rs 65,000.

iPhone 6s(32GB)variant was earlier priced at Rs 50,000, while 128GB variant was available at Rs 60,000. But after GST, Now, iPhone 6s 32GB and 128GB are available at Rs 46,900 and Rs 55,900 respectively.

Apple is offering a maximum discount on its premium iPhone 7 Plus smartphone after GST. iPhone 7 Plus (128GB) variant was announced in India at a price of Rs92,000, Now, it gets a discount of Rs 6,600 and will be available for Rs 85,400. On the other hand, iPhone 7 (32GB) and (128GB) were previously available at a price of Rs 72,000 and Rs 82,000 respectively. Now, both the variants are available at Rs 67,300 and Rs 76,200.

Similar to iPhones MacBook’s are also getting price cuts like MacBook Air (13.3-inch) with 128GB SSD is now available at Rs 77,200 which was previously available at Rs 80,900. On the other hand, MacBook (12.0-inch) with 1.2GHz was earlier pricedRs 1,09,900 and is now available at Rs 1,04,800. MacBook (12.0-inch) with 1.3GHz is available at Rs 1,28,700, which was earlier priced at Rs 1,34,900. MacBook Pro (13.3-inch) prices also gets got cut down, which was available at a starting price of Rs 1,09,900, is now available to at a starting cost of Rs 1,04,900.

Apple is also slashing the price of its iPad line-up with the newly announced 10.5-inch iPad Pro getting a discount even before it goes on sale. The new 12.9-inch Ipad Pro with 512GB storage will be available for Rs 97,000, which was tagged 1 lakh plus price at the time of launch. The 10.5-inch iPad Pro now starts at Rs 50,800 for the 64GB WiFi-only variant and goes all the way up to Rs 84,500 for the 512GB variant with Wi-Fi and Cellular support.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has stated that India will remain one of the top priority markets for the company. With the new price cut, Apple seems to be passing the benefits of GST to consumers.
