Akshay’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha found a place in Bill Gates Inspirational Stories of 2017

As there are only days left in the calendar of 2017 and it’s time to look back into the year so far. Microsoft co-founder, Bill Gates listed down six things in a series of tweets from around the world that inspired him in this tough year. Bill Gates started his series of tweets by saying, “There’s no denying that 2017 was a really tough year… but it also delivered some amazing moments of hope and progress. Here are some inspiring tweets that you may have missed…”

But look, there was something from Bollywood movies that made its place in the list. In one of his tweet, Bill Gates said, “Toilet: A Love Story, a Bollywood romance about a newlywed couple, educated audiences about India’s sanitation challenge.” Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar starrer Toilet: Ek Prem Katha made it to Bill Gate’s list for its message of spreading awareness about the problem of sanitation in India. The movie received mixed reviews but was praised by many for its theme. The film was applauded for highlighting the sanitation problems that the country faces at large and was also supported by various sectors of the government for spreading the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan message started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha was about a newlywed couple who lives in an under-developed village and problems arise when a woman is expected to walk to the fields every morning to do her morning routines. The film was seen by many as a public service announcement. However, the film spread the message that is desperately needed in our country. This theme combined with a love story and was inspired by true events. Hence, created quite an impact on the audience.

The five other things on his list were,

  • World Food Prize-winner Akinwumi Adesina using his award money for grants to young Africans involved in agriculture.

To conclude his series of tweets about the things which inspired him in the year 2017. He said, “There’s no denying 2017 was a really tough year… but it also delivered some amazing moments of hope and progress,” Bill Gates prefaced his list. “These tweets made me feel better about 2017 and more optimistic about the new year.”

Now, speaking about coming new year 2018 – Akshay Kumar’s new film PadMan shines a light on menstrual hygiene and spotlights A Murugunantham, the inventor of a low-cost sanitary napkin making machine. Let us wait and see if this also makes to any inspiring list.
